What is La liga?
La Liga Latina or The Latinx League is a newly founded grassroots network of curlers belonging to a variety of curling clubs across the United States of America. We want to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in curling for Black, Indigenous, People of Color people, which includes us Latinas, Latinos, Latinx.
Founding members belong to the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club, the Hollywood Curling Club, the Southern California Curling Center, the Wine Country Curling Club, and the Rock Creek Curling Club in Denver.
The La Liga members are united by our passion for curling and our cultural traditions passed on from generation to generation of ancestors. Together, we are creating a Curling Cultura with our presence in the sport by bringing our cultural heritage to the Spirit of Curling and the Spirit of Curling back to our everyday lives.
Our logo is a curling house that honors Latinx ancestry, and has a hidden Easter Egg message of ‘Curling Cultura’ on the tee line in Spanish. Any Latina, Latino or Latinx person who sees this design will find the message: MI CASA ES SU CASA, which literally translates as MY HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE, but which really means YOU ARE WELCOME HERE! ¡AQUÍ ERES BIENVENIDO! This can be your sport too.
This house also visibilizes the Latina, Latino and Latinx curlers already in our curling clubs. We are already here. ¡Aquí estamos y no nos vamos! We are a diverse group! We are social club curlers, and competitive curlers. Some of us are even international curlers. We are foreign born immigrants and primary Spanish speakers, or USA born multi-generation immigrant Latinx people and therefore primary English speakers.
Like other people of color, Latinas, Latinos and Latinx people face intersectional struggles caused by systemic injustices that impact some of us more than others, particularly where race, gender, sexual orientation, diverse abilities, immigration status and class intersect.
La Liga Latina is inclusive of all races, ethnicities, ages, gender, religion, sexual orientations, abilities, economic status, immigration status and other diverse backgrounds. ¡Mi casa es tu casa! We are here to welcome you into curling.
