PRESS RELEASE
Press Contact: Liza Beres     info@Curling.la     PH: 213-349-3864

USA Curling is excited to announce the inaugural USA Curling 5-and-Under National Championship will be hosted by the Southern California Curling Center on May 12-15, 2022.

The 5-and-Under, initially supported by the United States Women’s Curling Association (USWCA) and an ad-hoc Grow the Sport committee, will now be included under USA Curling’s umbrella of sanctioned National Championships. The 5-and-Under Championship fuels one of USA Curling’s key initiatives of strengthening a foundational level of the sport by creating a competitive pathway for curlers with five years of experience of less.

“Although I started my curling journey as a junior, I vividly remember working hard toward making it to what would hopefully be my first national tournament, the Junior National Championships,” said 2018 Olympic Gold Medalist John Shuster. “To me, piloting our 5-and-Under National Championship gives curlers who found our sport later in life something similar to work toward.”

In addition to advancing competitive experiences, the qualification structure for the annual USA Curling 5-and-Under National Championship will provide member clubs from across the country the opportunity for their 5-and-Under bonspiels to serve as qualifying events for the field of 24 teams that will compete for the 5-and-Under National title at the National Championship.

“I’m so proud of where we’ve taken grassroots curling and am excited for the direction it’s going by giving these curlers a true championship experience to fuel their curling journeys,” added Shuster.

Hosting and Competition Eligibility:

To classify a 5-and-Under bonspiel as a 5-and-Under National Championship qualifier, the bonspiel must:
  • Be hosted by a USA Curling member club
  • Be completed by April 17, 2022
  • Be submitted for approval by November 7, 2021

5-and-Under teams can be comprised of any combination of men and women curlers. To be eligible to qualify for the 5-and-Under National Championship, every participant must:
  • Have five years of curling experience or less
  • Be a dues paying member of a USA Curling member club
  • Upon qualifying through a 5-and-Under bonspiel, submit a $500 entry fee (per team) to compete in the National Championship

USA Curling thanks the USWCA for their efforts and continued commitment toward fostering sport engagement and development and looks forward to leveraging the combined knowledge of John Shuster (National Team Athlete), Matt Gamboa (Southern California Curling Center Co-Founder) and Dean Gemmell (Director of Curling Development) to further evolve grassroots curling in the United States.

REGISTER YOUR 5-AND-UNDER BONSPIEL
If you have any questions regarding the 5-and-Under National Championship or the qualification process, please contact Director of Curling Development, Dean Gemmell.

The Southern California Curling Center will be hosting a qualifying 5 and Under bonspiel in March, 2022.

Angelenos flock to Southern California Curling Center, the newest and largest facility on the West Coast dedicated to the Olympic sport of curling. Grand opening August 27-29.

(Vernon, Calif) August 6, 2021 - Southern California Curling Center (SCCC) opened its doors last month to enthusiastic crowds eager to experience a facility custom built to showcase the Olympic sport of curling.  The 42,000 square foot facility, converted from a warehouse space, is located at 4545 Pacific Blvd, in the city of Vernon, just three miles from the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.

The venue is a first of its kind in California and boasts the most sheets of dedicated curling ice west of the Dakotas. A grand opening weekend is scheduled for August 27th through 29th, featuring an inaugural tournament, ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug 28 at 5:00pm, and a public open house. The open house will take place on Sunday, Aug 29 from 11am-2pm, and is open to anyone who has ever seen the sport and thought “I can probably do that!”. Reservations may be made in advance at www.curling.la/learntocurl.

On hand for the ceremonies will be captain of the 2018 Olympic gold medal team, John Shuster. “Many of us curlers around the country have seen the passion for curling over the past decade in Southern California,” says Shuster, “so we are so excited for all of them to now have a place to curl everyday and share our sport more easily with the rest of the LA area.”

The opportunities for growth beyond Southern California is evident as well. “We are delighted that we have been able to contribute in a small way to the opening of this new facility”, said World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness. “The huge growth of our sport in the United States is something we have long anticipated, and to now have a dedicated facility in the second biggest market in the country is a significant step forward. We have no doubt that this facility will become a foundation of the curling community in Southern California.”

Southern California Curling Center is a member of USA Curling and the home of Hollywood Curling, a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization dedicated to growing the sport of curling in Southern California.  As the only curling club in Los Angeles County, Hollywood Curling’s 125+ members now have a permanent home after 13 years of renting ice at various local ice rinks. The club will host leagues, tournaments, workshops, skills clinics, and more.

“This is an exciting time for curling in the United States, particularly in Southern California,” Says USA Curling CEO Jeff Plush. “Between hosting Curling Night in America and the Olympic Mixed Doubles Trials in Irvine later this year, and the opening of a curling facility in the media capital of the world, I see curling booming in Los Angeles and Southern California as we look to defend our Olympic gold medal next year in Beijing.”

Southern California Curling Center is also the home of
Curling Mexico, the national organization for curling in Mexico. In conjunction with Curling Mexico, Southern California Curling Center will offer programs that will help to grow curling in Southern California and support the Federation in their attempt to grow the sport not only among Angelenos of Mexican descent, but also dedicated curling in Mexico City and beyond.

In addition to serving the local population through leagues, private parties, and corporate events, Southern California Curling Center will attract curlers from all over the world for tournaments & competitive events. The new facility is hosting dozens of Learn to Curl classes this summer, giving Angelenos the opportunity to try the sport in a 90 minute class with one of SCCC’s experienced and encouraging instructors, and provides all of the equipment and stones needed to play a game.  The events are open to the public with advanced registration, and are recommended for ages 8+.

Founded by local entrepreneur, former SpaceX engineer, and Michigan Tech alumnus Peter Dohm and his partners, the Southern California Curling Center team brings over 25 years of curling experience to ensure the highest quality experience possible to those looking to curl in Southern California. Joining him in operations are a team of curling professionals with extensive curling operation experience; Matt Gamboa (Vice-President, Marketing; an LA native with a background in entertainment, real estate, and urban planning), and Liza Beres (Vice-President, Operations; a Canadian transplant with over 15 years of production management experience). In addition to the operations team, SCCC has recruited to its advisory board Olympic Gold Medalist John Shuster, and Chad McMullan of Rock Solid Productions, a USA Curling partner company.

About Curling

The sport of curling has seen a tremendous increase in popularity since becoming an Olympic medal sport in 1998. Originating in Scotland, the sport was brought to North America where it has traditionally thrived in Canada and the Midwest. Though curling has been played in California since the 60s, it took Olympic coverage for it to really take off when Americans became fascinated watching televised matches of athletes hurling 42-pound granite stones to a target 150 feet away while teammates sweep the ice in the path of the stone. Clubs have been forming in non-traditional markets like Phoenix, Atlanta, and Charlotte utilizing available hockey ice until they can make the leap to curling-only facilities. The success of the USA Men’s team at the 2018 Winter Olympics capturing the country’s first gold medal in the sport has translated to an explosion of new curlers eager to try the sport for the first time.

About Southern California Curling Center

Southern California Curling Center was formed to create a dedicated home for curling in the Los Angeles region. By bringing business know-how with strategic partnerships, the Center has managed to break through the hurdles that a challenging market like Los Angeles has to offer in order to bring the sport of curling to a new population.  We will become a premiere facility for competitors at all experience levels, from the newly inducted to the elite world champion, allowing year-round opportunities to grow and promote the sport, providing a unique and enriching experience for the local community. The club’s goal is to introduce the sport of curling to the local community, to foster the social and competitive spirit of the sport and to teach and develop curlers to compete at the local, national and international levels. In addition to public Learn to Curl events, Hollywood Curling also hosts skills clinics, tournaments, and a youth program called School of Rocks. Hollywood Curling is a volunteer-run, 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is a member of USA Curling and the Mountain Pacific Curling Association (MoPac).  “Curling Night in America” Heads to Irvine

Great Park Ice and FivePoint Arena to host “Curling Night in America” on August 24-27, 2021

California will host its first major international curling competition as “Curling Night in America” is scheduled to film at the Great Park Ice & Five Point Arena in Irvine, California on August 24-27, 2021.

“Orange County Sports Commission is proud to bring the first major international sporting event to the destination since the onset of the pandemic,” said Tim Ryan, Orange County Sports Commission Chairman. “Fans, athletes and locals alike will be able to see how diverse and accommodating Great Park ICE, the four-rink 280,000-square-foot Anaheim Ducks practice venue and public facility, is for all ice sports, including curling, a sport not typically associated with Southern California.”

The event, a result of a partnership between USA Curling, NBC Sports Network, the World Curling Federation, and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, will film for the return of the seventh season of the made-for-TV event.

The format of “Curling Night in America” welcomes one men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles team from competing nations to play in a round-robin tournament, utilizing a points system to name a winner of each division and to crown an overall champion.

The duo of Vicky Persinger and Chris Plys, 2021 U.S. Mixed Doubles National Champions, will compete in the mixed doubles contest.

Team Peterson (Tabitha Peterson, Nina Roth, Tara Peterson, Becca Hamilton, and Aileen Geving), 2021 World Women’s Curling Championship bronze medalists and 2018 Olympians, will represent the United States in this season’s filming of “Curling Night in America”.

In the men’s division, 2018 Olympic gold medalists, Team Shuster (John Shuster, Chris Plys, Matt Hamilton, and John Landsteiner), will be representing the United States following their top six finish at the 2021 World Men’s Curling Championship that qualified the United States for a spot in the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

With the participation of the top curlers in the country, bringing “Curling Night in America” to Southern California will continue to build the positive momentum around curling in the region that has led to the recent establishment of the Southern California Curling Center, the biggest dedicated curling facility west of Fargo, North Dakota.

“Curling has been around Southern California since the 60s, but between these big USA Curling events and the opening of the Southern California Curling Center, the region’s first ice facility dedicated to curling, the sport is poised to really take off here this year,” said Matt Gamboa, Co-Founder of Southern California Curling Center. “Bringing such high-profile events just as we’re opening will help jumpstart the facility and continue to spread the grassroots of curling in Southern California.”

Sharing in the excitement of bringing a high-profile event to the area is the Orange County Curling Club.

“The Orange County Curling Club is thrilled to be part of the committee bringing America's favorite curling competition to Great Park Ice in August 2021, “said Mike Cassidy, President of Orange County Curling Club. “This is the biggest curling broadcast event to ever come to Southern California and we are excited for the local exposure this will bring to our sport!”

The support of area clubs, coupled with the excitement and collaboration of Great Park Ice & Five Point Arena and the Orange County Sports Commission makes Irvine the perfect location.

“We look forward to hosting some of the top curling countries in the world as they compete in an event that has proven to boost engagement and promote grassroots growth within our sport,” said USA Curling CEO Jeff Plush. “The exposure and accessibility of curling will always be a top priority of the organization, and consequently, we’re thrilled to deliver the sport into homes across the country through the NBC Sports Network.”

Southern California Curling Center announces partnership with Curling México to be the official venue in the United States.

(Vernon, Calif) May 14, 2021 - Southern California Curling Center (SCCC) has partnered with Curling México to become the official venue of the federation in the United States. The agreement comes as SCCC is on track to open the first curling facility in Southern California this summer. Curling México has been a member of the World Curling Federation since 2016 and has sent teams to compete at world championships and qualifying events in recent years.

“Los Angeles has 1.2 million Mexicans, the most of any place outside of Mexico City,” says Rodrigo Velez, head of the  Federacion Mexicana de Curling AC, “so it only makes sense to partner with Southern California Curling Center to grow our federation and our sport.” Velez and the federation have plans for a dedicated curling facility in Mexico City and see this strategic partnership as a way to build momentum for the sport in Mexico.

Founder and CEO of SCCC, Peter Dohm, is excited about the partnership. “One of our goals has always been to be a community space for our immediate neighborhoods in Vernon, Downtown LA, and surrounding areas. Los Angeles is one of the greatest multicultural cities in the world; this is one step to help reflect that fact back into curling.”

Athletes playing at the SCCC will be able to join Curling México as members and based on their eligibility, they can compete for positions on the national team. In 2019, Mexico sent a team to the Mixed Doubles world championship for the first time. The same year, a women’s and men’s team competed in the Americas Challenge for a spot at the world championships against the United States and Brazil, where they finished second.

“This is just the beginning,” says Dohm. “We have a unique opportunity to be a truly international facility and I welcome conversations with other federations who want to have a presence at our facility.” Brazil is currently the only Latin American country with curling ice, but the growth potential for the region is big. As Velez notes, “curling was the second most-watched sport in Latin America during the 2018 Olympic games.”

The SCCC plans to open this summer. At six sheets, it will be the largest facility west of Fargo, North Dakota, and will almost double the amount of dedicated ice in the Mountain Pacific region. Located in Vernon, California, just south of downtown Los Angeles, it is centrally located to all of Southern California. The center will offer programming year-round, including leagues, tournaments, junior, adaptive curling, and college curling, and hosting national and international events.
